Today, the 15th. of October 2007 is Blog Action Day and this year, millions of bloggers around the world will come together on this day to talk about one common issue. This year, the topic is about the environment.
When it comes to talking about the environment, the first thing that comes to mind will be the image of cities clouded in smogs or forest being burnt away ruthlessly and blatantly. It is a picture of abuse and I think most who writes about environment will be writing around this genre.
Environment is a much bigger issue than the forest being burnt or the cities being polluted. That is only the most common abuse that relates to the environment directly. There are however some indirect issues that affects the environment as a whole that is largely ignored by the general consensus simply because the affects are not as visibly damaging as forest being burned away.
I chose to ask. “Does Blogging Affects The Environment”. No, it doesn’t and Yes, it does. Of course blogging does not affect the weather or contribute to the air we breathe in. There are no visible clue that blogging affects the environment in it’s pure form, but blogging does and will continue to affect the environment. In it’s abstract form.
Unintentionally and unconsciously, bloggers have been contributing to the erosion of the environment. Millions of computers switched on simultaneously have caused the radiation level of the planet Earth to shoot to an all time high. When before all this blogging phenomena started, it was still acceptable because most computers will be shut down after work and usage of computers were minimal after working hours.
It has been proven scientifically that extended hours spent in front of computers enhances early aging, dryness of the skin and the deterioration of the eye sight, a sign compatible to those exposed to environmentally hazardous working conditions. Though the affects are not as extreme, it does in a small way, alters the lifestyle of the individual in the long term.
Maybe i should change my question to, “Does Computer Usage Affects The Environment” instead of Blogging, but I guess both are inter-related. While it is not compulsory to do certain things on the computer, like writing a letter or drawing a picture, you definitely needs to switch on the computer when you want to blog. In the end, it is blogging that is causing the most damage.
