Blog Estate Speculation.

by Costa on August 13, 2007

If this thing catches on, I think we will see a new trend in the Blogosphere. Remember John Chow having sold his prime blog estate for a cool $1000 a month and it was snapped up within the hour? The buyer is eleven21.com as I found out today. I was wondering what Advertisments he has in mind that is so lucrative that he is willing to fork out 1000 bucks a month for. I am very naive indeed. I did not think out of the box. I did not forsee that he was going to speculate on that piece of blog property and put it up for re-sell at $1,500! What ingenuity. Given the way that there are really crazy people are willing to pay big bucks for exposure like this, I think he can really pull this off and make a decent profit out of it.

I have my reservations though. The main thing is this piece of prime blog estate will only be his for one month. Unless John Chow manage to sell another few months of that space, it will only be one month’s wait before another can have that space for themsleves. So why would anyone want to spend 500 bucks extra for something that he can get after 30 days? But then given the selling power of JohnChow.com, it won’t be surprising that it will be fully booked 6 months down the road, so there is high hopes yet for eleven21.com. At this time of writing, Bidvertiser has already booked the space for next month. I think there will be more to come.

Is the blogosphere seeing an emergence of a new trend and will Blog Estate Speculation take root? This is going to be real exciting to watch. We all know that when JohnChow pulls off something like this, there will be hundreds or maybe thousands that are going to mimic, not taking into account whether they are on par in reputation or charisma as the pioneer.

If blog estate speculation takes off, we will be seeing what we witness during the real estate boom some years ago. During that time, people were blindly snapping up every available land and selling them at great profits after a few months. Land that has been abandoned and considered as wasteland with no suitable usage suddenly became prime land. Will blogs also become such? Will a blog that has reasonable potential become a speculation target? These are exciting times indeed.

Hi,
Thanks for the link in your article. I knew the ad flip would generate buzz, but not quite this much.

You said,
“The main thing is this piece of prime blog estate will only be his for one month. I had this reservation too, but then John said in his blog post that his $1000 rate was only good through September. Since Bidvertiser has already bought the ad for September (and nobody knows what John will charge after that), $1500 (prorated daily) is now quite a bargain.

Stay tuned!
Ryan
