There used to be a time when Technorati played a very important part in Blogs. Bloggers proudly displays their rankings in their sidebars for all to see and it was a sign of prestige to have a good Technoratic Rank, because the ranks works hand in hand with Google’s Page Rank. The better you rank in Technorati, the chance of getting a high Page Rank is higher, because Technorati based their rankings on the number of backlinks that your blog has and the more backlinks you have, the better will be your Page Rank.
Over the years, the importance of Technorati seems to have taken a backseat. Some has complained that their system is flawed and does not really demonstrate the true value of a blog, nor does it help in improving the overall publicity of a blog. With the emergence of all those web 2 stuffs like social bookmarking sites, Technorati slowly lost it’s shine with bloggers. When before, all blog gurus will advise that the first thing to do when you start a blog is to claim your blog in Technorati, this has taken a twist and the advise being propagated now is to get your blogs listed in social bookmarking sites.
Having said that, Technorati is still the place to look when you want to know the latest trend in the Blogoshere. It remain as one of the most popular Blog Searcher for the latest news among bloggers and many bloggers stalks the front page “most searched” topics before writing their post. A hot topic in Technorati often is sure traffic inducer as in the case of the recent romps of a Hong Kong Star whose name is one of the most searched topic in Technorati for weeks. Many have experienced tremendous spikes in their blog traffic with post that are aptly titled with his name and the stars that he was involved with.
Despite having lost some of it’s lustre, claiming our blogs in Technorati is still considered a “must” by serious bloggers. It takes less than 2 minutes to claim our blogs and WordPress automatically pings our post each time we update. It’s like “claim and forget”, though it can become an ego booster if we check in once a while to see some new blogs linking in. After months of delay, I have finally claimed this blog in Technorati and this is my Technorati Profile If you haven’t done so, I would suggest that you too claim your blog. It’s suppose to make your blog more visible in the Blogosphere and we can’t be short of that.

I ran across this post while looking for a practical explanation of why one should claim a blog in technorati. Thanks for the explanation - it finally makes sense.
