There are also marketers who tries to sell you scripts that could purportedly get you thousands of backlinks with a click of the mouse which will in turn, will bring you hordes of traffic.
Some have the misconception that backlinks will bring direct traffic. Most of the time, this is seldom the case unless you get links from a very popular blog with thousands of visitors. In normal cases, the benefit of links is just the juice it gives to your post.

in real life, seems kinda spammy to start commenting on blogs with keyword name 
, at least from my point of view.
But for everything else like do follow directories should be great.
