Getting The Right Keywords.

by Costa on December 17, 2007

When I started this blog, I promised to share what I have learned and for the past week, I learned that getting the right keywords and using those keywords in our blogs will play a big part in the success of our blogs. I guess most of you thinks that they already know this. I too, thought I knew that getting the right keywords is crucial, so each time I title my post, I try to title it in a phrase that I think people might use when searching for such information.

Along the way, and after many many articles, I do have some post with the right keywords that ranks top in Google’s Search Results. However, these post brings only about five or six hits weekly and I am sure many of others are experiencing the same thing. This had me suspecting that what I have read about getting the right keywords and all those relative information are bullshit. I suspected that all those gurus are not telling me enough on how a right keyword can actually bring in thousands of hits monthly.

That was until I started reading Blogger Unleashed. It sort of lighted up a bulb above my head. I finally understood why even though the right keywords are ranking among the top in Google SERPs, but I am not getting the hits for it. The reason is so simple. It is because no one is searching using that term! Simple as that! There might be millions writing about that same keywords as shown in the Search Results and I might be ranked number one among the millions, but it is totally worthless if no one is Searching for that term using those keywords I have used and I am sure the other millions who has the similar keywords are not getting any either.

Getting The Right Keywords.

I did an experimental post yesterday using the term , “Can A Low Traffic Blog make Money” with the methods I have learned from Blogger Unleashed. It shot straight to number one in Google within 5 or 6 minutes,(another thing I learned about getting indexed by Google within 5 minutes) but when I checked my stats today, I got zero hits from that term. I think that confirms it. So what IS the right keyword and how do we determine that it is THE RIGHT KEYWORD? That is another thing I learned.

The Keyword Tool will play an important part in my blogging life from now on. There are so many out there if you would just Google for it. I can’t make any recommendations as I have just started using some of them so I don’t know how accurate they are.

The idea is, when you have brainstormed up a good keyword, use the keyword tool to see where that word stands. Check for the searches that have been done with those keywords. If the tool shows that there were thousands of searches based on that keyword, you know you have a good one in hand. But that is only the first step.

The next thing is to go and do a search in Google yourself with those keywords. Since it is such a terrific keyword, you can rest assured that there will be millions and millions of hits. You can also rest assured that all the high ranking blogs will be dominating the first few pages. Again, it will be a waste of time if your blog is nowhere compared to those high rankers. So it is back to the drawing board.

Rephrase all the right keywords again. Check again. Do it until you have come up with a phrase that is not so often used BUT still getting thousands of Searches. That, my friends, are the right keywords that you should use for your next blog post.

It is no easy task. Sometimes it is almost impossible, but there are other words. You can always blog about something less competitive. There is no point throwing yourself against a rock if you are just an egg like me. We will only hurt ourselves.

I have been following your entries and noticed that ever since you start following the guru your keywords are bold.

Does it help or is it used to highlight something to your readers?

LOL. Ya.. it’s an ongoing experiment. It seems Google robots picks up highlighted words either in bold of within the “h” tags better and faster. I am just trying the method out.

Many prefer to do that with sub titles which has the same effect.

Thanks for the tip. :-)

It’s not just about the keywords. From my observation, it’s through:

1. Keyword
2. Heading
3. Copy
4. Bold
5. Link
6. Italic
7. Frequency
8. Traffic

I discovered this through my Apple iPhone in Malaysia series which has made my blog one of the top ones in Malaysia for those keywords.

I also believe the older the keyword, the more difficult it’ll be rank it. For instance, getting the right keyword or finding the right keyword phrase may take longer depending on the search trend. :)

Thanks!

I don’t quite get what you wrote. Getting to the top of Google SERPs is easy, now that I know how. If you search for the term,
“Getting the Right Keyword” now, you will see I rank 1 and 2 on the front page. I did it in less than 10 minutes after posting.

I based this term on what I would use if I were looking for info about wanting to get the right keywords.

The difficult part is getting the hits from your number 1 position. There is no joy in being top in Google SERPs but you get 0 hits from it.

To get a keyword or an exact phrase that 2000 or more others would use everyday is the ultimate goal. If you rank number one in Google and 2000 uses that same words for their searches you are almost guaranteed of 2000 hits daily from that keyword. Else there is no point being number 1.
