Progress is learning from your own or other people’s mistakes. So everything you see around you has been imitated during the spans of time - except for the wheel lol. It is purely based on past knowledge that failed, was rejected or improved. Someone had an idea, put it into action, created the product or service, launched it and became either a success or failed miserably. The imitating normally start when something becomes very successful and people see $DOLLAR$ signs (the ultimate motivator). There are hundreds of variants (failures) for Google, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, but they are the masters of their niche and therefore reap the rewards. If you are going to imitate, make sure you have sufficient knowledge of what you imitating or you will just become another Variant. Progress is learning from your own or other people’s mistakes. Just look around you, people are imitating other people every day form teenagers to adults.

Agree with the main point of this post and the point made in the comments - imitating the "right" stuff that someone's doing and then adding your own brilliance to it will definitely help you to stand out. Of course, you should always have your own style, but copying someone's positives will mean you don't have to make the same mistakes they do/did :)
