To exactly predict the number of hits that you will get for your key phrase is almost an impossibility even if you use the most expensive keyword software. What you get will be a rough estimate but that will be more than enough to let you know whether you have a good word or a phrase in hand. Keyword tracking soft wares, does the calculation for you using their own algorithms and most A-list bloggers depends on them for their keyword research. They swear that the answers they get are dependable and most encourages us to subscribe to at least one keyword tracking site is we are serious about getting traffic from keywords.
A free method to roughly predict the amount of search hits that we will be getting is taught in The Thirty Challenge that I mentioned briefly yesterday. The method uses 3 different free tools to predict the amount of hits you will get for your key phrase. You have to use the free version of Wordtracker, Google Search and mostly, Google Trends.
I wish I can embed the video here as it explains very clearly on how to go about it, but since the first part is privy to members only (You can sign up for free) I’ll try my level best to give a brief description of what I have learned.
First up, you will have to come up with a keyword phrase that you think will be hot. When you have come up with one, use Wordtracker to check the amount of Searches that have been made for that keyword. I use a simple example using the words, “honey bees” as my brains are dried out now trying to come up with a better word.
If the number of Searches are respectably high for that keyword, go to Googles and search for that term with the quotation marks. This will bring in the results for the exact words. See the number of pages in the search results that you have to compete with. The lower the number means the lesser the competition which means you will have a good chance of getting the keyword to the front page. If you can’t get into the front page for that keyword, then all your efforts will be in vain. You can have a keyword with 5000 Searches a day, but you won’t get anything simply because your keywords are buried so deep no one will find you. “Honey Bees” with the quotation marks returns a search of 658,000 competing pages, which is not good. Ideally, something less than 20,000 will be easier to compete and get ranked in the first few spots.
I bet you are disillusioned by now. Just brainstorming for those keywords and not having them used by millions who are more established that you is a sure turnoff. Most of us will just simply throw up our hands and say good riddance to keyword research let alone try to get that keyword into the front page, which is another big heartache. LOL. We might just as well stick to the good old way of taking a wild guess and hope we get lucky.
Anyway, for those who are hard headed and must do whatever it takes, we head over now to Google Trends, assuming you have now a killer keyword. The problem with the freetool at Wordtracker is the figure will not match the amount of hits you get even when you are ranked number one for that word. It might show you that the word receives 1000 searches, but you might actually get only 200 hits. We can do a comparison at Google Trends to determine roughly how many hits the word will actually bring.
To make that happen, we first have to have a keyword that we know brings in the number of hits for us. If for example you rank number one for the keywords “honey bees” and you have a daily search hit of 300, we can use that word as a base for comparison. If you don’t then we use the words that the Challenge Team has, which is “male yeast infection”. This word brings about 500 hits a day for one of their team members who ranks number one for that phrase in Google Serps. I’ll stop here and direct you to the second part of the video which can be downloaded in viewed in Quicktime. It is all clearly explained. I hope the link still works though.
