Super mummy, my mentor, blog buddy and one that i have a super duper crush on, Lilian, passed this meme which was started by Ben Yoskovitz of Instigator Blog. over to me. Titled The Ultimate Guide to Productivity, this is a Group Writing Project to gather tips from various minds on their individual and unique way to increase productivity.

When coming to productivity, I am afraid I am not too productive myself. No doubt, I try to maintain 5 active blogs, updating and writing reviews everyday as well as managing the hardware store, I don’t think I can call myself really productive. My bonzais have been neglected and my small garden has not been weeded for weeks.

I have but one tip if you want to increase productivity in any thing you do. It’s a crude tip but I think it works. I used it a couple a times and I think I really achieved something out of it.

Close all rear exits and escape doors.

I did not invent this tip. It was taught by Sun Tze in his Art of war and has been successfully used in battles of old. In a very well documented case by people studying SunTze’s teachings, a General who was facing an enemy twice his size decides to forge ahead to win the battle. In front of him is a river that he must cross and after the river lies the fort that he must capture in order to bring peace to the land. He took the unprecedented step to destroy all the rafts after crossing the river. After that, he burned all food rations and broke all cooking utensils. Faced with starvation and no way of turning back, he told his troops that if they want to survive they must take the fort. And fight they did. For survival. And win they did. Against an enemy twice their size.

I implemented this in my effort to raise funds for the local haemodyalisis centre. I too made an unprecedented move by telling people to pay me at least $1 per kilometre should I finish walking the full course of 60 kilometres. What started as a joke became a reality because friends just shoved the money in my pockets immediately after I made the announcement. There was no turning back for me and finished walking 60 km I did.

By closing all rear escapes and exit routes there is no other way other than to forge ahead. When faced with a seemingly impossible task, finding no escape and the only possibility of survival is forging ahead, the situation forces out the supernatural abilities hidden within each and everyone of us. That is the time, when productivity surges to an all time high. That is the time when the impossible becomes possible.

Great tip. I need to re-read the Art of War.

I’d have to say that having no escape option is a key to getting work done. I can’t believe how effective it can be.

This is a great tip. The first time I learned about it was in the context of a committed relationship… as long as one person (or both) feel that there’s a back door, they never really commit to their partner, and the relationship suffers.

I can see so many applications of this rule, it’s amazing.

Thanks for sharing (and, for the link).
