Step by Step to Adding a Sitemap in Google

I believe the post i did a week ago was too brief for some. So here is a detailed step by step tutorial on how to add a google Sitemap for your blog. Assuming that you have uploaded the Sitemap Generator plugin and activated it. You should be able to see your Sitemap URL under Options.

Go to:

Dashboard-Options-Sitemap,

Under the Manual location, second option you will see your sitemap URL

http://www.yoursite/sitemap.xml

You can now go and submit this adresss to Google Sitemaps using your Google Account.

Go to: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

If you haven’t sign in, sign in from there.

You will come to the Webmasters Tools – Dashboard

In the Add Site window, insert your Blog’s URL

Click OK

You will come to Summary and you can see whether Google has Indexed your site. In the yellow column, you will be asked to verify your site.

Click “very your site”

You will be brought to “verify site ownership”

Under “Choose Verification Method” choose “Add a Meta tag”

Immediately you will be given a string of codes. Right Click on the codes, “Select All” and “Copy”

Open a new Tab or a New Window. Do not close this “Verify” window.

Go to your blog’s Admin Panel- Dashboard – Presentation – Theme Editor – Header

Open the Header, paste in the Meta tag code that you have copied from the Google Verification page just now somewhere after the <head> tag. Normally on the 3rd or 4th line.Take a wild guess if you are a noob like me. The will be many other codes that starts with the words, “meta” located there. Just paste it before or after one of those.

Click “Update File” at the bottom

Wait until the file is updated successfully.

Go back to the Google “Verify Site Ownership” Page

Click “verify”

You will be brought back to the Webmaster Tools Dashboard.

You will see your site listed there.

Under “Site Verified” you will see a greed tick.It means you site have been verified.

Click on “Add a Sitemap”

You will come to the “Add Sitemap” page.

Under “Choose type”

Choose “Add General Web Sitemap”

Under the 3rd. option, paste your sitemap URL that you copied from your sitemap generator during the first step.

Click “Add Web Sitemap”

You will come back to the Webmaster Tools Dashboard. You will see a tick under “Sitemap”

That’s all.Google will take a day or two to start crawling to your site. It’s a noob’s way. Don’t know if geeks goes about it differently.
