The Importance Of A Blog’s Theme

by Costa on May 31, 2008

It is general knowledge that to be presentable for any occasion, we should be dressed right. Like wise, for any blog to be attractive, we too should have a right theme. The theme we use will create the very important first impression on all our visitors. It can be a plain ugly theme or it can be a exceptionally well designed and beautiful theme, but it has to make a lasting impression for the people who first lay their eyes on it. The image of the theme should be etched so deeply in their minds that it will be difficult for them to forget your site. An impressive theme can cover for the shortfall in lack of quality contents, but of course if you had both, then all the better.

The motive of having a very special and unique theme, beautiful or otherwise, is for people to easily recall your site. Like if someone makes a passing mention of your site but can’t remember your URL,

“Hey remember that blog….something something dot com? The one with an ugly looking monkey as the header image? Remember??”

The reply, if your theme has been impressive enough, should sound something like this,

“Oh yeah! Sure. The ugly monkey! I remember that blog! It’s xxxx dot com!”

If it’s a plain looking theme, like the default WordPress Theme, Kubrick, how can anyone describe it? If they can’t describe it, very soon they will forget about it, no matter how good your contents are.

Look around you and you will find that most if not all successful blogs has themes that are unique and easily recognisable. Some of them are designers themselves and those who are not, pays huge sum of money to those who are, to create something that no one else has.

Of course this belief only holds true for bloggers who are and want to establish a blog that they hope to build in the long term. For those in the niche blogging sector, they will pay less attention to their themes but concentrate totally on their keyword related contents. Some even prefers the plainest of all plain themes, for they are not expecting repeated traffic but rather pure organic traffic looking for information on the topics that they are blogging about. A plain looking theme will not distract these pool of traffic from whatever Ads they have in their blogs.

Having said that, most from these sector of niche bloggers, have a personal blog that they present in a totally opposite manner to their loyal readers. This is the blog where they will spare no effort and expenses in the design and the layout and all of them will never reveal to you their plain looking but money making blogs. Most will actually tell you that it is important to have a unique blog theme to stand out from the crowd.

Since we or most of us, starts out with one blog and tries to build that one into something well known, we should pay some attention on how our blog themes look. We should ask ourselves if it is unique or impressive enough. If you are up to it, you should do some modifications on the free themes that you are using. Just a simple change to the header image can already do wonders and create a lasting impression. Of course not everyone have the talent to come up with good designs, but there are good souls who give away free vectors which you can use freely.

Those who can afford big bucks, can get a designer to design a really unique one, but those who has some spare cash, but not a very large amount, can purchase premium themes that are done by professionals. Though it might not be as unique, these premium themes are impressive and you won’t lose an arm buying it. A good hunting place for Beautiful WordPress Themes that goes for less than $50.00 is Template Monsters. There are designs for every genre of blogs ranging from child care to technology and from the designs I see there, all of them are very impressive.

What do you make of Minimalist themes? I done one myself and am currently using in my blog.

They are not very impressive aesthetically but yet they are reasonably popular among some bloggers, me for example.

wow, Darran. That theme is really at the minimal! LOL.

I agree with you that many, not some like you said, likes this kind of theme. This is especially so for bloggers who have content rich blogs and do not need anything else to attract people. People who likes these kind of blog themes are content kings and I believe there are millions out there.

A suggestion. Put it up for download. You will be getting lots of good backlinks.

Yeah, the main aim was for it to be extremely quick.

So far, I haven’t gotten any requests to make it available for download and probably don’t intend to until I changed my own theme. I did a lot of coding to have an AJAX commenting, searching and paging though it is still other development.
