Upgrading to Wordpress 2.2 for Idiots and Noobs

Now I am not very idiotic but I am a big noob when it comes to operating systems, softwares or stuffs like that, but I like to do things myself rather than asking for help, so I upgraded my Wordpress to the latest version using the best way I know. The Idiot’s way. Before you read any further or if after reading you still want to use my method, please bear in mind that I take no responsibility if you screw up big time. I have done this a few times and each time it worked for me, but I can’t guarantee it will work for you. So try it if you want to, but at your own risk.

Now if you go to the official Wordpress site you will get all the information you need to do a proper upgrade. Problem is, since I am such a noob, I can’t make heads or tails out of the instructions. I did it the crudest way that an idiot would only do.

First, download the latest version. Extract it to your Desktop or wherever you you keep your extracted files.

Log in to you cPanel. using your favorite FTP client.

Double click “www” to open your existing Wordpress Files.

All your Wordpress files from your existing version is here. There are also many other files. Don’t ask me about them, because I don’t know what they are for. I’m just a noob, remember? Now go to the left panel and open your extracted New version of Wordpress 2.2. Sure hope you remember where you placed it. Double click on that folder to open the files inside.

Compare what is in the new Version with what is in the older version.

Now comes the crucial part. This step could either spells success or BIG DISASTER! So be CAREFUL! One by one, highlight the files on the right panel (that’s the files in your old version) while comparing the files in the New Version. Make sure you only highlight files and folders that you can find in your New Version. Files that are NOT in the new version should be left UNTOUCHED.

Highlight all similar files, EXCEPT, I repeat, EXCEPT, the “wp-content” folder and “wp-config php” file. If you delete these 2 you are going to wish you never read this and you will feel like jumping off from the Petronas Twin Tower. That goes for all the other files that are not found in the New Version.
Leaving all other files and the 2 crucial ones untouched, right Click and hit delete. Wait until all the highlighted files have been deleted (might take a few minutes). Then go to your left hand panel. Highlight everything in the New Version except, the “wp-content”folder. If you do that, Wordpress will ask you if you want to overwrite and if you are so dumb to say yes, then again you will regret ever reading this and go jump down from the Twin Towers. With all the files and folders highlighted EXCEPT “wp-content” folder, right click and hit Upload.

Wait a few minutes for all the files and folders to be fully uploaded. Log in via your Admin and click UPGRADE. Within 5 seconds, your new version will be working.

If you want to do what I have done, you should proceed with great care and a very clear head. Triple check all the files that you are about to delete. Make sure that what you have deleted will be replaced by the new Version. Just to let you know, the “wp-content” folder holds all your post, images, themes, plugins and whatever that you see in your blog. If that is gone, you will be left with an empty blog just like when you first started. The “wp-config php” hold your vital passwords to your database. If that is gone, you will never be able to access your blog again and I heard all other files there especially the .htaccess file is also of utmost importance. So proceed carefully. TRY IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!

lilian, there is a button that deactivates all the plugins at once.
The official install guide is quite hard to understand so i decided to write a tutorial just like yours, with pictures about how to upgrade to wordpress 2.2 and i allso describe the compatibility issues on widgets.
