I am in the blur again. After reading Page Rank isn’t about Links by Brandon Hopkins this morning, I indeed realise that page rank isn’t all about links. Other than that, I don’t think it’s about frequent updates either. So has all that I have learned and practised gone to waste?
Less Links, Higher Page Rank.
Taking my own blogs as a good example. The Blog that I have been vigorously working on, giving away Free links as a lure, sometimes updating twice a day and doing what all good bloggers do to promote it never moved from it’s Page Rank 4 during the last Ranking update. Whereas the blog that I just started a couple of months back, writing about making a living, shot from 0 to 5, just like that. Now what gives? The incoming links for both the blogs differs by 100%. Maybe it’s the contents. Even though the old blog has more contents, it is all irrelevant contents as it is a personal blog. The newer blog has a niche of it’s own and all post are very relevant to Search Engines.
Could it really be the Contents?
Is contents really the deciding factor for Page Ranking? I really cannot say for sure. Problogger.net’s contents are all relevant and very informative. I rarely see Darren Rowse stray from his blog’s niche with new information and ideas posted almost everyday, yet the blog still languishes in Page Rank 5 while JohnChow.com even though I would say 40% of his post are irrelevant with him talking about his earnings, food, or his travels managed to hit Page Rank 6 during the last update.
It’s Also not about Frequent Updates too.
Arne Brachhold’s last update was on 5th. of March 2007. Page Ranked 6. What this blog has I think is unique visitors because this blogger is the author has many Wordpress Plugins which includes the hugely popular Sitemap Generator Plugin.
Chris Pearson haven’t updated Pearsonified since the 30th.of April and it’s a PR7 blog. Again what he has is the 2 immensely popular Themes that is used by thousands, including me. I got to say his blog is very informative with lots of articles that Googles loves.
What Makes them successful then?
I really don’t have a concrete answer, but from what I have observed, blogs that have something great to offer from the beginning like having a fantastic Theme or Plugin that thousand and thousands have downloaded and are still downloaded daily, can really sit back and see their page Rank go up without much updating. What about those who don’t have such a talent to come up with these killer programs? Then I guess it’s back to writing as many contents that Google likes as possible. As long as you keep the spiders from Google busy, they will be happy and if they are happy, your Page Rank goes up. That’s my opinion anyway, but then Darren Rowse has been keeping Google real happy…

after i received some advices from A-list bloggers that i should concentrate on my content instead of finding the magic bullet to increase my PR, i’ve been buzy and put my soul in giving more contents to my blog … and guess what …
my PR remains the same during the last review as well …. it seems the spiders are pretty full with my contents and something else is lacking … so it’s not the content which will determine your PR ranking … it could be other weird things but not necessary back-links …
strange huh?
